La mia storia musicale inizia in tenera età, quando mio padre Walter, grande appassionato di musica classica, mi fece ascoltare la tetralogia dell' Anello del Nibelungo di Richard Wagner, anticipandomi il racconto fantastico della storia del Valhalla e degli eroi della mitologia nordica e la vicenda di Sigfrido.
Erano i primi anni '70 ed il regalo di Natale di mia madre, una chitarra acustica, sarà l'evento che determinerà la mia vita futura.
Dopo alcune lezioni per imparare a "strimpellare" qualche canzone, ho proseguito da autodidatta fino agli anni '80, suonando rock.
Altro evento importantissimo è stato l'ascolto di “Mysterious Traveller” dei Weather Report. Una folgorazione….seguita da anni di intenso interesse per la storia del Jazz, letture ed ascolti di un vastissimo repertorio di geniali musicisti.
Dal 1980 al 1986 ho studiato presso le scuole "Andrea Del Sarto" e “C.I.M.” di Firenze con Riccardo Bianchi.
Nel 1989 volo a Los Angeles per studiare al Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT - Musicians Institute) di Hollywood, dove ho conseguito il diploma.
In questa scuola ho frequentato le classi di Joe Diorio, Scott Henderson, Don Mock, Carl Shroeder, Ron Echete, Mike Miller, Norman Brown, Tommy Tedesco, Peter Sprague, Dave Pozzi, Gary Willis, Les Wise e Howard Roberts. Nel corso di questa prima permanenza negli States ho partecipato a seminari e/o lezioni private con Jim Hall, Joe Pass, Allan Holdsworth, Mike Landau, Chick Corea, John Abercrombie, Mick Goodrick, Billy Childs, Mike Stern, John Scofiled, Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Robben Ford, Frank Gambale.
Al rientro in Italia ho proseguito con attività didattiche e musicali, facendo parte del primo staff dell’Università della Musica di Roma, ed insegnando presso i seminari strumentali di “Arezzo Wave”, gli Stages di Specializzazione del Centro Avanzamento Professionale di Roma (Guitar CAP) di Nick Diletti, i Seminari di Specializzazione della Super Guitar School presso la Scuola di Musica “CIAC 3” di Roma, in collaborazione con la rivista “Axe Magazine”.
Negli anni ’90 ho suonato nella band jazz-rock “Silent Will” con Paolo Russo, Lorenzo Lapiccirella e Fabrizio Morganti e successivamente in “Loop de Loop”, duo strumentale col batterista Dante Melena, teso ad esplorare sonorità elettroniche con ampio uso di tecnologie informatiche e digital signal processing.
Nel 1993 torno negli States per alcuni mesi, di nuovo a Los Angeles e successivamente a New York. Qui ho studiato privatamente con Ted Greene, John Abercrombie, Steve Khan, Bill Connors e Wayne Krantz.
Nella seconda metà degli anni ’90 ho continuato a studiare privatamente per corrispondenza, con il magnifico Charlie Banacos, Boston.
Dal 1995 al 2000 ho scritto per la rivista chitarristica “Axe Magazine”, Roma, contribuendo con articoli mensili su armonia moderna, recensioni di dischi e di strumenti/processori, trascrizioni ed interviste ad artisti internazionali.
Nel maggio del 2000 ho partecipato come curatore del progetto “ICHINEN” alla registrazione dell’omonimo cd, presso il Rhythmic Music Conservatory di Copenaghen. Il lavoro è stato incentrato sulle tecniche di processamento di strumenti acustici.
Nell’agosto dello stesso anno ho inciso “ITALO DE ANGELIS & FABRIZIO MANDOLINI” nel mio studio. Il lavoro in duo col sassofonista italiano unisce delicate atmosfere sonore a tecniche di processamento audio “non ortodosse” ed utilizzo di algoritmi frattali di generazione armonica e ritmica.
Nel 2001 ho collaborato con Luca Formentini per “THE HIDDEN SOUND” project, un intenso lavoro sperimentale basato sul potenziale musicale dei suoni della scultura. Il lavoro dello scultore su legno, pietra, fuoco e metallo è stato campionato, processato ed assemblato in 7 differenti movimenti; registrato su cd ed utilizzato per una performance di improvvisazine live al festival “To Sting”, Milano. Il lavoro è stato commissionato dalla Fondazione MM&T e da Walter Prati (ECM artist). Nello stesso anno ho suonato in duo con Roberto Zorzi (Denardo Coleman, Henry Kaiser, Elliott Sharp, Steve Jansen, Joey Baron) nel progetto “THE NAME OF THE THING”.
Il suono e gli effetti mi hanno sempre affascinato al punto tale di collaborare con varie case produttrici di processori digitali (Roland, Lexicon, Eventide).
Dopo qualche anno di beta testing per Eventide, ho lavorato come “algorithm engineer” per la casa americana dal 2001 al 2010, disegnando algoritmi e presets per DSP7000/7500, Orville, Eclipse, H7600, H8000/A/FW e contribuendo alle specifiche di design degli effetti ed U.I. del “Reverb” plugin per ProTools e pedali Time Factor, Mod Factor e Pitch Factor. Ho creato nuove tipologie di effetti e introdotto algoritmi per tecnologie emergenti, quali surround 5.1, nell’arsenale sonoro di Eventide. Ho lavorato su sistemi di controllo MIDI più efficienti e per supporto di applicazioni varie, dal broadcasting al live-Front of the House, dalla post produzione video (remaster in surround dei DVD di “Star Wars” per Steve Katz), allo studio ed al musicista live.
Tra le mie collaborazioni tecnologiche sono presenti artisti quali Jan Garbarek (ECM Records), Henry Kaiser, Steve Morris (6 channels guitar system), John Petrucci (Dream Theater), Robert Fripp (King Crimson), Jon Hassell, John Popper (Blues Traveler), Eivind Aarset (solo artist - Nils Petter Molvaer), David O’List (The Nice), Dave Matthews Band, Joshua Redman, Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), Dweezil Zappa (Zappa Plays Zappa World Tour w/Steve Vai).
My music journey starts as a very young kid, when my father Walter, a true classical music lover, had me listening to the entire Richard Wagner "Der Ring Des Nibelungen" tetralogy. He introduced me to the listening with the tale of the whole fantastic story about the Valhalla and its nordic mythology heroes, and the story of Sigfried. In the very early '70s my mother gave me and my brother a couple of acoustic guitars as Christmas presents and that will be the event shaping my future life.
After some lessons in which I learned "strumming" a few chords and songs, I went on as a self-taught guitarist up 'til the '80s, playing Rock.
Another fundamental event was the listening of Weather Report "Mysterious Traveller". It was a real enlightenment on my musical world… followed by years of intense active interest for Jazz music and its history with a lot of listening and readings on its genius musicians.
From 1980 to 1985 I studied at "Andrea Del Sarto" and "C.I.M:" schools in Florence, with Riccardo Bianchi.
In 1989 I enrolled to G.I.T at the Musicians Institute Of Technology in Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA where I graduated.
In this amazing school I attended classes with Joe Diorio, Scott Henderson, Don Mock, Carl Shroeder, Ron Eschete, Mike Miller, Norman Brown, Tommy Tedesco, Peter Sprague, Dave Pozzi, Gary Willis, Les Wise and Howard Roberts. Back home I started teaching and playing. I've been part of the original teaching staff of the "Università Della Musica" in Rome and have taught the "Arezzo Wave" instrument seminars, the Guitar CAP specializing stages in Rome with Nick Diletti, the Super Guitar School seminars at the CIAC School in Rome, in collaboration with the guitar magazine "Axe".
In the '90s I was part of the jazz-rock band "Silent Will" with Paolo Russo, Lorenzo Lapiccirella and Fabrizio Morganti; later on I was in the "Loop De Loop" duo with drummer Dante Melena, exploring electronic sounds and technologies based off computers and DSP processing.
In 1993 back to U.S.A. for a few months, again in Los Angeles and in New York City. Here I had private lessons from Ted Greene, John Abercrombie, Steve Khan, Bill Connors and Wayne Krantz.
In the second half of the '90s I kept studying privately thru mail with the magnificent Charlie Banacos, located in Boston.
From 1995 to 2000 I have been part of the editor staff of "Axe Magazine", Rome, contributing with monthly articles on modern harmony, guitar sound technology, CDs and products reviews, transcriptions and international artists interviews.
In May 2000 I have been part of the "ICHINEN" project as supervisor and musician. The CD recording was made at the "Rhythmic Music Conservatory" in Copenhagen. The whole project was based on acoustic instruments processing techniques.
In August 2000 I recorded "ITALO DE ANGELIS & FABRIZIO MANDOLINI" in my studio. The duo work with the italian sax player matches delicate sonic textures to "unorthodox" audio processing techniques… and fractal algorithms generating harmonic and rhythmic content.
In 2001 I took part to the "THE HIDDEN SOUND" project with guitar texturalist Luca Formentini; an intense experimental work based on the music potential of sculpture sounds. The sculptor work on wood, stone, metal, fire was sampled, processed and assembled in 7 different movements; recorded on CD and used for an improvisation live performance at the "To Sting" festival in Milan. The work was commissioned by the MM&T Foundation and Walter Prati (ECM artist). In the same year I have played in a duo with Roberto Zorzi (Denardo Coleman, Henry Kaiser, Elliott Sharp, Steve Jansen, Joey Baron) in "THE NAME OF THE THING" project.
Sound and effects have always fascinated me to the point of collaborating with some fine makers of digital processors (Roland, Lexicon, Eventide).
After a few years of beta testing for Eventide, I have worked for them as "algorithm engineer" from 2001 to 2010, creating algorithms and presets on DSP7000/7500, Orville, Eclipse, H7600, H8000/A/FW and providing specs for effects and U.I. of Reverb plugin for ProTools and for the Time/Mod/Pitch Factor pedals.
I have created new types of effects and algorithms for emerging new technologies like surround 5.1 to the already vast sonic array of Eventide processors. I have worked on more efficient MIDI control systems and in different fields such as broadcasting, live Front-of-the-House, video audio post production, live and studio musician.
Among my tech collaborations and consulences are artists like Jan Garbarek (ECM Records), Henry Kaiser, Steve Morris (6 channels guitar system), John Petrucci (Dream Theater), Robert Fripp, Jon Hassell, John Popper (Blues Traveler).
